Not from any European country but I'd suppose that it's significantly easier to rag on the US rather than Canada because the US is one of the most publicised countries in the English-speaking world, and Canada has a nice guy reputation in-and-out of the US. A lot of US people I see don't go for Canada either.
obligatory i am not Indigenous to Turtle Island and am in fact a 1st gen immigrant from India to Australia and this is simply my attempt at solidarity with fellow poc motivated by my decolonial sentiments disclaimer. needless to say, if i get something wrong, Indigenous people, pls feel free to drag my ass! i love learning about how to be a better ally to my fellow poc.
and that’s part of the problem! ‘canada’ has just as much of an atrocious history when it comes to it’s Indigenous populations as the rest of Turtle Island. like fuck, you can’t look at images of that one memorial for stolen and murdered Indigenous children at that art museum in what is colloquially known as vancouver and come away thinking that this is not the act of a violent and bloody regime hellbent on wiping out any trace of the traditional custodians of the land. canada is a settler colonial state just as much as usamerica and the fact that that gets ignored simply because they have a better pr machine is simply a sign of how much more work needs to be done.
besides, canada is not the 'nice guy’ even outside of the context of it’s Indigenous populations. my brother lived there for college for 3 years and has personally been victimised by canadians’ anti-indian sentiments and been called racial slurs and threatened in public spaces like the metro simply for daring to exist as a brown man. i had white women being weird and condescending to me as well for that one week i was in Tkaronto (i believe that is the right name for the colloquially known toronto? First Nations people from the area, pls correct me if i am wrong) for his graduation. canada flies under the radar because of stereotyping and the usual usacentricism but that doesn’t mean that canada still isn’t a settler colonial state. which is a very strange sentiment to me considering how much folks on tumblr like joking about half of the geneva conventions being written because of canadian war crimes. canada is not your friendly next door neighbour they’ve got dead Indigenous bodies hidden in the basement and i wish more people talked about that
